Fire Analysis with CFD: Fire Safety and Simulation Technologies

Fire safety is a critical factor in building design and industrial facilities. Computer-aided fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to analyze the spread of fire, smoke movements, and ambient temperature changes. CFD fire analysis helps evaluate the effectiveness of fire prevention and control systems during the design phase.
Benefits of CFD Fire Analysis
Understanding Fire Spread Dynamics: CFD simulations help reduce fire risks in buildings by predicting in which direction and how fast the fire will spread.
Modeling Smoke and Toxic Gas Movements: Evaluating the movement of smoke and gases formed during a fire within the building to develop evacuation plans.
Evaluating the Efficiency of Fire Suppression Systems: The effectiveness of fire control mechanisms such as sprinkler systems, fire curtains, and ventilation systems is tested.
Cost and Time Savings: Analyzing fire scenarios in a digital environment instead of physical tests reduces costs and saves time.
Software Used in CFD Fire Analysis
The main software used in CFD-based fire analysis are as follows:
FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator): Developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), this software is widely used in fire and smoke spread simulations.
ANSYS Fluent: It is preferred for fire analyses in industrial facilities and large structures.
PyroSim: It is the graphical interface of FDS and makes fire simulations more useful.
Stages of Fire CFD Simulation
Geometric Modeling: A 3D model of the building or facility is created.
Mesh Creation: The simulation area is divided into small regions (cells) in order to make calculations.
Determining Boundary Conditions: Parameters such as fire starting point, burning speed and smoke movements are determined.
Simulation Run: The fire spread dynamics are examined with computer-aided calculations.
Evaluating the Results: The effects of the fire inside the building are analyzed and the necessary precautions are determined.
Conclusion
CFD fire analysis is a critical technology that increases the level of safety in building design and minimizes loss of life and property. Safer structures can be built by predicting the effects of fire with the help of developing simulation software. The use of CFD analysis in the field of fire safety will become more widespread in the future.
